Italian Open: Poland’s Fręch into 3rd round

Polish tennis player Magdalena Fręch has booked her spot in the third round of the Italian Open, making it three Polish women still in contention at the prestigious clay-court event in Rome.

The Polish world No. 25 dispatched Belarusian Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-4 in the round of 64 on Friday.

The 27-year-old Pole will next face the winner between Serbia's Olga Danilović and China's Zheng Qinwen for a place in the last 16 of the women’s singles.

Meanwhile, Poland's 32nd-ranked Magda Linette advanced to the third round with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Greece's Maria Sakkari in Rome on Friday.

Polish star Iga Świątek, the world No. 2 in women's tennis, is scheduled to play American Danielle Collins in the round of 32 on Saturday.

Świątek won last year's Italian Open. She also triumphed in Rome in 2021 and 2022.

The 2025 Italian Open runs until May 18.
