Football: Legia Warsaw beat Lech Poznań to win Polish Super Cup

Polish Cup holders Legia Warsaw have beaten top-flight league champions Lech Poznań 2-1 to win the Polish football Super Cup.

The game on Sunday marked the sixth time Legia have won the national Super Cup title in a curtain-raiser to the new football season in Poland.

The one-off Super Cup match is traditionally held between the winners of the Polish Cup and the Ekstraklasa premier league champions from the previous season.

Legia in early May beat Pogoń Szczecin 4-3 in the Polish Cup final.

Later that month, Lech were crowned champions of Poland’s top-flight Ekstraklasa football league for the ninth time, while Raków Częstochowa finished runners-up as the 2024/2025 season came to a close.

Legia last Thursday beat Kazakh side FC Aktobe 1-0 at home in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League first-round qualifier.

Lech will enter the UEFA Champions League qualifiers in the second round, while Raków Częstochowa and Jagiellonia Białystok are set to join the UEFA Conference League qualifiers at the same stage.

Lech will face Iceland's Breidablik as part of their campaign to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

Raków will face Slovakia’s MŠK Žilina in the Conference League second round, while Jagiellonia will take on Serbia's FK Novi Pazar.

Second-round matches for the Champions League are scheduled for July 22–23 and July 29–30. Conference League matches involving Raków and Jagiellonia will be played on July 24 and 31.

Poland’s Ekstraklasa premier league kicks off its 2025/2026 season on Friday.
