Lech's Swedish striker Mikael Ishak scored a hat trick—all three goals from penalties—at the Municipal Stadium in the western Polish city of Poznań, as the home side kicked off its European campaign in dominant fashion.
Croatian centre-back Antonio Milić, Portuguese right-back Joel Pereira, Swedish midfielder Leo Bengtsson and Poland’s own Filip Jagiełło each added a goal for the hosts.
Höskuldur Gunnlaugsson netted the lone goal for the visitors, who were reduced to 10 men in the 32nd minute after Viktor Margeirsson received a red card, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Lech will face Breiðablik in the return leg next Wednesday, July 30, in Iceland.
The winner of the two-legged tie will advance to face either Red Star Belgrade of Serbia or Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar in the third round of Champions League qualifiers.
To reach the Champions League group stage, Lech must defeat Breiðablik, the Red Star/Lincoln Red Imps winner, and one additional opponent.
Lech won the Polish premier league championship in May for the ninth time, finishing one point ahead of Raków Częstochowa and 10 points clear of Pogoń Szczecin and Jagiellonia Białystok.
Meanwhile, Legia Warsaw, Poland's most successful football club and the winner of this season's Polish Cup, finished the league campaign in fifth place.
Legia Warsaw last Thursday advanced to the second qualifying round of the Europa League after defeating Kazakhstan’s FK Aktobe 2–0 on aggregate. They will next face Czech side Baník Ostrava.
