American Luca Urlando took gold, dominating the race from start to finish with a time of 1:51.87, while Australia’s Harrison Turner claimed bronze in 1:54.17.
Urlando led early, but Chmielewski made a strong push in the second half, finishing 0.77 seconds behind the American. Turner was 2.30 seconds behind the winner.
This is Chmielewski’s second long-course world silver in the 200m butterfly, following podium finishes at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka and last year’s European Championships in Belgrade.
He also won bronze at the World Short-Course Swimming Championships in Budapest in December.
During the Singapore championships, he broke the Polish record twice - first in the heats with 1:52.89, beating Paweł Korzeniowski’s 2009 mark of 1:53.23.
Chmielewski qualified for the final with the second-fastest time, while his twin brother Michał was eliminated in the semifinals.
This is Poland’s first medal at the event in Singapore.
