The Polish team, ranked 3rd in the world by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), unexpectedly struggled against the 22nd-ranked Vietnamese rivals. Simple errors led to the Poles losing the opening set - and although they dominated the following two, they struggled again in the fourth. Ultimately, though, Poland managed to close out the match in four sets and grab three points in their opening Group G game.
On Monday Poles will play their second Women's Volleyball World Championships match against Kenya, who lost 3-0 against Germany in their opening game.
Starting with the 2025 edition, the World Championships are held in a new format. 32 teams compete now (previously 24) split into 8 groups, and top 2 from each group will advance to the knockout stage (round of 16).
This means that the medalists will play 7 matches instead of 12 (as was the case in the last edition), and a total of 64 matches will be played at the tournament, compared to 100 in 2022. Also, World Championships will now be held every two years, instead of every four as it was before.
