Arango, 24, is ranked 84th in the WTA standings. She has only one Grand Slam match win to her name, at this year’s French Open, and her career-high ranking is 76.

Świątek, who recently won the Indian Wells title and claimed the US Open trophy in 2022, broke Arango in the fourth game of the first set to take a 3-1 lead. She swiftly closed out the opening set in 26 minutes, 6-1.

The second set saw an early break for Świątek, before she secured another at 4-2 and served out the match 6-2.

If Świątek goes on to win the US Open and current world No. 1 and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus is eliminated before the quarter-finals, the Polish star will reclaim the top spot in the WTA rankings.

Next up for Świątek

In the second round, Świątek will face Dutch player Suzan Lamens, who defeated American Valerie Glozman 6-4, 6-2.

The 26-year-old Lamens, ranked 66th, will meet Świątek for the first time on the professional circuit.
