Wrestling: Poland's Baran wins world bronze in Zagreb

Poland’s Robert Baran won bronze at the world wrestling championships in Zagreb, securing his country’s first medal of the competition.

The 33-year-old placed third in the men’s 125 kg freestyle, sharing the podium with Shamil Sharipov of Bahrain.

Baran clinched the medal by defeating Hungary’s Vlagyislav Bajcajev.

On his way to the medal match, Baran beat Omar Ihab Sarem of Romania and Germany’s Mohsem Mansour Siyar before losing in the semifinals to Georgia’s Giorgi Meshvildishvili, who went on to claim silver.

Iran’s Amir Hossein Abbas Zare took the gold, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The championships in Zagreb run until Sunday, with Poland’s medal hopes now resting on the women’s events.
