Tennis: Poland’s Linette through to 2nd round of Madrid Open

Poland’s Magda Linette has made it through to the second round of the women’s singles at the Madrid Open tennis tournament in Spain, with a straight-sets win over Robin Montgomery of the United States.

The 34-year-old Pole, ranked world No. 57 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), defeated the 339th-ranked American player 6-4, 6-3 in their first-round clash in the Spanish capital on Tuesday.

Up next for Linette at the clay-court tournament in Madrid is 18-year-old American Iva Jović.

Meanwhile, Poland’s world No. 4 Iga Świątek is due to play Ukrainian qualifier and lucky loser Daria Snigur in the second round on Thursday.

Świątek reached the semifinals in Madrid last year after winning the title in 2024.

The 2026 Madrid Open runs until May 3.
