Tennis: Poland’s Świątek eases into Italian Open semifinals

Poland’s Iga Świątek has stormed into the semifinals of the women’s singles at the Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome, with a straight-sets win over American Jessica Pegula.

The 24-year-old Pole, who is ranked world No. 3 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), defeated the fifth-seeded American 6-1, 6-2 in their quarterfinal clash on Wednesday.

Świątek will face Ukrainian Elina Svitolina for a place in the championship match at the clay-court tournament in Rome.

Świątek is a three-time Italian Open champion. She triumphed in Rome in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

The 2026 Italian Open runs until May 17.
