PM hails 'Poland Garros' ahead of French Open final

“We are all keeping our fingers crossed,’ Poland's PM wrote ahead of the Roland Garros final, as the nation's "dream runner" is set later on Saturday to compete for a Grand Slam title.

One of the standout stories of the tournament, Polish qualifier Maja Chwalińska arrived in Paris ranked 114th in the world and had to win three qualifying matches to reach the main draw.

Nine victories later, the 24-year-old is now one win away from one of the most unlikely Grand Slam titles of the Open Era.

‘We are all keeping our fingers crossed for Maja,’ Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on social media.

‘And who knows — maybe the Paris courts will once again turn into POLAND GARROS,’ he added.

Chwalińska is only the fourth Polish woman to reach a French Open final and could become just the second Polish champion in tennis history after Iga Świątek. 

In the final, scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CEST, the Pole will face Russia’s Mirra Andreeva.
