Zmarzlik won the season-ending Grand Prix competition in Toruń, north-central Poland, on Saturday and claimed his second world championship.

He last year became the third Pole to win a world title, after Jerzy Szczakiel in 1973 and Tomasz Gollob in 2010.

President Andrzej Duda said in a tweet on Saturday that Zmarzlik defended his title in “great style.”

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki tweeted to say that he watched the competition in Toruń from the stands. He congratulated Zmarzlik, while also applauding another Polish speedway rider Maciej Janowski, who finished fourth overall.

The sport of speedway has many fans in the country, and Zmarzlik was in January named as Polish athlete of the year for 2019 following a public vote.
