Winter Olympics: Polish ice dancers finish 17th

Polish figure skaters Natalia Kaliszek and Maksym Spodyriev finished 17th in the ice dance competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics in China on Monday.

Kaliszek and Spodyriev earned a total of 167.31 points from the rhythm dance and free dance portions of the event.

They had been hoping for more, but Kaliszek fell on the ice while being lifted by Spodyriev during their free skate routine, Poland's PAP news agency reported.

France's Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron won the gold with a record total of 226.98 points, improving on their silver-medal finish four years ago in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Russia's Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov took the silver, on 220.51 points, while the bronze went to the American team of Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, with 218.02.

Spodyriev, who was born in Ukraine, moved to Poland in 2014 and was granted Polish citizenship two years later.
