Tennis: Poland through to United Cup semis after win over Italy

The Polish national tennis team has advanced to the semifinals of the United Cup tournament in Australia after beating Italy 3-2 in their quarterfinal clash on Wednesday.

The mixed doubles duo of Iga Świątek and Hubert Hurkacz earned the decisive point for Team Poland, overpowering Italy’s Camilla Rosatello and Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 6-2, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Earlier in the day, Poland's Świątek, the world number one in women's tennis, beat Italy's Martina Trevisan 6-2, 6-4, and Poland's world No. 48 Magda Linette defeated Italy's Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 6-2.

Meanwhile, in the men's singles, Poland's Hurkacz, who is ranked 10th in the world, lost 4-6, 6-3, 3-6 to Italy's Matteo Berrettini, while Poland's world No. 260 Daniel Michalski was beaten by Italy's Musetti 1-6, 1-6.

The United Cup semifinals will be played on Friday and Saturday in Sydney, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

The United Cup is a new mixed-teams event featuring 18 countries, according to organizers.
