Basketball: Poland’s Anwil win FIBA Europe Cup

Polish basketball club Anwil Włocławek have claimed the 2022/2023 FIBA Europe Cup, beating France’s Cholet Basket in the two-legged final to seal the first-ever European trophy for Poland.

Anwil lifted Europe's second-tier cup after winning the final’s second leg 80-78 in western France on Wednesday night, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

It gave them an overall 161-155 victory on aggregate, having won the first leg 81-77 in Włocławek on April 19, according to news outlets.

Anwil win historic first European cup for Poland 

Wednesday’s decider at Cholet’s La Meilleraie Arena was a tight and high-energy game, according to PAP. 

“Neither side had firm control of the second leg and the lead changed hands throughout an enthralling encounter,” the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) said.

Cholet took a 42-37 lead into the break, but Anwil produced "a fantastic performance" in the second half, overcoming the favoured French side with some exciting team play, the PAP news agency reported.

Victor Sanders was Anwil’s top scorer on the night with 20 points, while Malik Williams came close to a double-double, with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Meanwhile, Finals MVP Phillip Greene added 11 points, according to FIBA.

Led by coach Przemysław Frasunkiewicz, Anwil became the first-ever Polish basketball side to win a European club trophy, PAP reported.

President Andrzej Duda took to social media to congratulate the team from the central city of Włocławek on its historic success.

The Polish president wrote: “The men’s basketball players from Anwil Włocławek have won the FIBA Europe Cup! Bravo! Congratulations! Thank you!”

Duda noted that it was the first-ever piece of European silverware for Polish club basketball, the PAP news agency reported.
