Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski and Sports Minister Sławomir Nitras have officially signed a co-financing agreement for the project.
Speaking at a press conference, Trzaskowski reflected on his personal connection to Stegny, where he learned to skate, adding that Poland’s "Olympic athletes and champions grew up here." He emphasized that the planned covered facility, to be completed by 2027, will meet all international federation standards.
Sports Minister Nitras, confirming the ministry's commitment, stated, "The city authorities are planning more, with a field hockey arena for 4,500 people planned to be built next to the track in the future." He also reassured that the ministry will continue supporting the project.
Designed by architect and former figure skater Janusz Kalbarczyk, the Stegny track has been operational since 1980. Previous plans to roof and modernize the venue have been proposed but never realized, often hindered by financial constraints.
