Barcelona star and Poland captain Robert Lewandowski said on Sunday he would not play for the national team again as long as Michał Probierz remains head coach, citing a loss of trust.

"Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the Polish national team coach, I have decided to step back from playing for the Polish national team as long as he remains the coach," Lewandowski said in a social media post.

"I hope I will be able to play for the best fans in the world again," he added.

Earlier on Sunday, the Polish Football Association (PZPN) announced via social media that Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zieliński had been named the team’s new captain, following a decision by Probierz.

"The coach personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the training staff of his decision," the post said.

Lewandowski’s announcement shocked fans, despite recent criticism for missing national team matches.

In late May, the 36-year-old striker said he would not join Poland's training camp ahead of its upcoming World Cup qualifier against Finland due to fatigue after a demanding club season with Barcelona.

"Dear fans, given the circumstances and the intensity of the club season, together with the coach we decided that this time I will not take part in the national team’s training camp in June," Lewandowski wrote on social media at the time.

"Playing in the red-and-white national colors has always been a dream come true for me, but sometimes the body gives a signal that it is necessary to take a break for a moment," he said. "I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the boys and believe there are still many beautiful moments and goals to come. See you soon!"

Poland opened its 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in March with home wins over Lithuania (1-0) and Malta (2-0).

The team next faces Finland in a Group G qualifier in Helsinki on Tuesday.

On Friday, the Polish team defeated Moldova 2–0 in a home friendly at the Silesian Stadium in the southern city of Chorzów. Lewandowski attended the match but did not play.
