Navrátilová, who was born in Prague and now lives in the United States, shared the post shortly after the official results of the 1 June presidential runoff were announced in Poland, a neighbouring country to the Czech Republic.
She reposted a message on X (formerly Twitter) by Project Syndicate, a global nonprofit media organisation founded in Prague in 1995.
The post included a striking quote from a commentary by Polish left-leaning public intellectual Sławomir Sierakowski: “Poles seem to have forgotten that their country once disappeared from the map of Europe; that their security depends on competent, responsible government.”
In the article, Sierakowski criticised the election outcome, stating that “by electing a scandal-plagued right-wing extremist to the presidency, Poles have once again made their country a laughingstock.”
Sierakowski called on the liberal, pro-European governing coalition to remind voters - before the 2027 parliamentary elections - that national security depends on competent leadership.
In the second round, Karol Nawrocki, backed by the right-wing populist Law and Justice party (PiS), narrowly defeated the Civic Coalition (KO) candidate Rafał Trzaskowski, receiving 50.89% of the vote to 49.11%.
