Consonni edged France’s Clara Copponi and Austria’s Kathrin Schweinberger at the finish line to take the overall lead.

Poland’s Kaja Rysz finished fourth.

Meanwhile, countrywoman Dominika Włodarczyk, who took fourth place in this year’s Tour de France, finished 10th in the bunch sprint in Zamość, a picturesque Renaissance town and a UNESCO World Heritage site about 60 km from the Ukrainian border.

The 26-year-old Consonni is an Olympic track cycling champion who also has three stage wins at the Giro d’Italia to her name, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Time bonuses from an intermediate sprint in Szczebrzeszyn and at the finish gave her a seven-second advantage over Copponi and Schweinberger in the overall standings.

Poland's Rysz sits in fifth place overall, 12 seconds behind.

The women’s Tour de Pologne is now in its third year.

The three-stage 333-km-long race is being held entirely in Poland’s southeastern Lubelskie province on mostly flat terrain.

Stage two on Wednesday loops around the historic city of Chełm, with Thursday’s final leg running from the spa town of Nałęczów to Kraśnik, about 50 km southwest of the regional capital Lublin.
