Tennis: Poland’s Świątek through to 2nd round of Australian Open

Poland’s Iga Świątek has made it through to the second round of the women’s singles competition at the Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament in Melbourne.

The 24-year-old Pole, ranked world No. 2 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), opened her 2026 Australian Open campaign with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Chinese player Yuan Yue on Monday.

Up next for the Polish tennis star at Melbourne Park is Marie Bouzková of the Czech Republic.

Świątek reached the semifinals of the women’s singles at last year's Australian Open, where she lost 7-5, 1-6, 6-7 to American Madison Keys.

The 2026 Australian Open started on Sunday and runs until February 1.
