Tennis: Poland’s Świątek through to 3rd round of Italian Open

Poland’s Iga Świątek has moved into the third round of the women’s singles at the Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome, with a three-set win over Caty McNally of the United States.

The 24-year-old Pole, who is ranked world No. 3 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), defeated the 63rd-ranked American 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 in their second-round clash on Friday.

Świątek, who had a bye in the first round, will next face Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto at the clay-court tournament in Rome on Sunday.

Świątek is a three-time Italian Open champion. She triumphed in Rome in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

The 2026 Italian Open runs until May 17.
