The defeat came on the world number three's 25th birthday and ended her record of winning all three previous meetings against the Ukrainian.

World number 15 Kostyuk, coached by Sandra Zaniewska, reached the quarter-finals for the first time in her career at Roland Garros, surpassing her previous best result of the last 16 – achieved in 2021, when she lost to Świątek.

Kostyuk arrived in Paris in strong form, having won the clay-court tournaments in Rouen and Madrid in the weeks before Roland Garros, extending her winning streak to 15 matches.

Polish tennis star Świątek had won the French Open in 2020 and from 2022 to 2024.
