Midfielder Oskar Kubiak of Slavia Prague, midfielder Bartosz Mazurek of RB Salzburg and midfielder Łukasz Poręba of German club SV Elversberg have received their first call-ups to the national team.

Poland will visit Romania on November 14 before hosting Sweden in Wrocław three days later.

Sweden lead Group 4 in League B with 10 points after four matches, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina with eight. Poland are third with four points, while Romania are bottom after losing all four games.

Urban said before the campaign that Poland hoped to challenge for promotion to League A, but acknowledged Sweden’s strength meant the team would also have to compete with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania for second place.

Poland began the campaign with a 0-0 home draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by a 3-1 defeat in Sweden. They then beat Romania 6-0 but lost 0-1 to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica.

Urban said Poland had deserved more than 1 point from their two games against Bosnia and Herzegovina, noting that their opponents managed only four shots on target across the matches.

However, he said the team had only itself to blame for its position in the group.

Poland must win both remaining games and hope Bosnia and Herzegovina drop five points to have a chance of finishing second.

Urban acknowledged that the team no longer controlled its own fate.

The coach has used the Nations League campaign to test new options, giving opportunities to younger players including midfielder Wiktor Nowak of Slavia Prague, defender Kacper Potulski of Mainz and Marcel Reguła of Zagłębie Lubin.

Urban said the competition offered a chance to experiment and assess new players, given the limited number of friendly matches.

The three newcomers are among several changes to the squad.

Urban said he wanted to look at alternatives in midfield rather than rule out established players such as Bartosz Slisz, Jakub Piotrowski and Bartosz Kapustka.

He singled out Poręba, who has been playing regularly in a demanding league.

Urban selected four forwards, including Robert Lewandowski of Chicago Fire, Karol Świderski of Widzew Łódź, Adrian Benedyczak of Turkish club Kasımpaşa and Mateusz Żukowski of Magdeburg.

Benedyczak missed the previous international camp through injury. Urban praised his pace and ability to run in behind opposing defences, adding that he had scored six league goals in Turkey.

He described Żukowski as having similar qualities.

Urban also backed Świderski, saying the Widzew forward was versatile and had been scoring in Poland’s top division.

Ellis Simms, the Coventry City forward who recently obtained Polish citizenship, was left out.

The 25-year-old has made four Premier League appearances this season, scoring once, but has played only 149 minutes across all competitions.

Urban said Simms had been under observation for some time but needed more regular playing time to meet the sporting criteria for selection.

Polish citizenship alone was not enough to secure a call-up, he said.

Lewandowski is returning to the national team for the second time since joining Chicago Fire.

Urban said the striker had learned from his experience of traveling from the United States for September’s camp, when jet lag affected his performance.

Poland will also be without two experienced goalkeepers. Marcin Bułka, who played in the team’s first four Nations League matches, and Kamil Grabara are unavailable, the latter recovering from a serious injury.

Urban again left out Łukasz Skorupski, who plays for Italian club Bologna and has not been included in the squad for a year.

Instead, he selected three goalkeepers from Polish clubs: Bartłomiej Drągowski of Widzew Łódź, Mateusz Kochalski of Wieczysta Kraków and Sławomir Abramowicz of Jagiellonia Białystok.

Drągowski is the only one of the three with national team experience.

Urban said selecting Skorupski would have been the safest option in the short term, but he wanted to assess other available goalkeepers and begin making changes in the position.

Defender Kamil Piątkowski of Legia Warsaw returns to the squad after an extended absence.

Poland will be without defender Jan Bednarek for the game against Romania because he is suspended after accumulating yellow cards.
