The Callas Tribute Prize NY celebrates the legacy of the legendary opera star Maria Callas and is bestowed on women who stand out for their achievements in music, the arts, theatre, fashion and social involvement.

The awards ceremony was held at Columbia University on Monday. It coincided with International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Węgorzewska-Whiskerd is artistic director of the Warsaw Chamber Opera.

Callas, a Greek American soprano, was one of the most renowned opera singers of the 20th century. She was born in New York in 1923; she died in Paris in 1977.
