A virtual Night of the Museums

Despite the opening of museums and galleries last week , as part of the second stage of easing restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus,  for safety reasons the  institutions  will not be organising the annual Night of the Museums, but plan it online.

Many of the museums have decided to invite for virtual trips of the exhibitions or reminiscences of the Nights form previous years- like the Krakow Saltworks Museum in Wieliczka, which is to present online , the nights of the years 2006 until 2019. The Krakow Saltworks Museum , which  opened to the public in 1966 offers a unique underground exhibition on the third level of the Wieliczka salt mine, which in 1978 was inscribed on the UNESCO heritage list.

Another invitation for a virtual Night of the Museums comes from the Pan Taduesz Museum in the western city of Wrocław. The Museum, founded in 2016 , devotes its leading theme to Pan Tadeusz, the title hero of the national epic by romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz .The first, exhibition  “Manuscript of Pan Tadeusz”,  as the Museum writes on its page “tells the story of an extraordinary book – perhaps the last one known in fragments by nearly all Poles by heart. The only existing manuscript of Adam Mickiewicz's masterpiece.” The second part of the permanent exhibition, “Mission: Poland” is an exhibition "about the romantic idea of freedom transferred into the reality of the Second World War and post-war period.” And a virtual trips around the second exhibition is planned for Saturday .

The Royal Castle in Warsaw, which opened its doors to visitors on May 4th is also planning a virtual Night of the Museums, to start on Saturday evening , a trip  which will enable to see much more of the Castle’s treasures than is offered in the present  tour organised  after the restrictions on the closure of culture institutions had been lifted.

Also the Museum of Sports in the capital joins the online Night .. inviting for a virtual tour of the museum, with special emphasis on one of its most valuable exhibits- a kayak , in which   Karol Wojtyła  used to canoe long before  he became Pope John Paul II. The sports museum also offers online chats with some of Poland’s leading representatives of the sports world, invited especially for the Night of the Museums.

The Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw invites for an online walk through the streets of a Jewish district in the the pre war capital.
