New York-based musician Ashano Omer and Clement Janinet of France received Third Prizes. Poland’s Dawid Czernik received one of the special awards – an invitation to perform at the Krzysztof Penderecki European Music Centre in Lusławice, southern Poland.

Fourteen musicians from 11 countries performed in the final stage of the event. They were selected from among forty jazzmen from across the world who had sent their recordings in the preliminary stage.

Launched in the city of Krakow in 2014, the Zbigniew Seifert Competition is held every second year. This year it was held online.

The competition is dedicated to the memory of Polish jazz violinist and composer Zbigniew Seifert, who was hailed as one of the world’s top violinists in the history of jazz. He started his career while still studying at the State Higher School of Music in Kraków.

He founded his own quartet and worked closely with the trumpeter Tomasz Stańko, soon becoming one of the finest representatives of European improvised jazz.

He died of cancer in 1979, aged 33. (mk)
