The finalists for the award will be announced next month.

Świetlicki, 58, is among the most prominent Polish poets of his generation. He has won several prestigious national literary awards, including the 1996 Kościelski Foundation Prize and the Silesius Award from the city of Wrocław (2012).

He is also a crime writer and musician, writing lyrics for and performing with two rock bands.

Zephyr Press describes him on its website as “one of the most versatile and rebellious poets in Poland [who] takes us into streets, cafes, rooms, and conversations where — with his signature dark glasses — he ponders metaphysical questions in the minutiae of daily life.”

The poems in Night Truck Driver are “about life, forgiveness, communication, love, death, and time ... [They] have an urban edge and bite,” the publisher adds.
