The annual music festival in Bayreuth, southern Germany, celebrates 19th-century German composer Richard Wagner. It attracts thousands of Wagner fans to the Bavarian town every summer.

The Polish singer is billed to perform as Wotan in Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre opera on Thursday night.

There are two more performances of the opera, on August 3 and 19.

Konieczny is a last-minute replacement for Austrian singer Günther Groissböck, who pulled out of the production a day before it opened.

Konieczny, 49, performed at the Bayreuth Festival several years ago as Friedrich von Telramund in Wagner’s Lohengrin.

His upcoming engagements include the part of The Conductor in Domenico Cimarosa’s Il Maestro di Cappella at the Chopin and His Europe Festival in Warsaw, and the title role in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer at Opéra Bastille in Paris.
