Warsaw's Royal Castle celebrates post-WWII reconstruction effort

Warsaw's Royal Castle has marked 50 years since the start of a nationwide effort to rebuild it from the ruins of World War II.

This past weekend, a family picnic was held, with free tours, concerts and theatrical shows as well as fencing lessons, presentations of period costumes and antique arms, and balloon trips.

The picnic was part of wider anniversary celebrations that began in January and run until 2024.

The reconstruction effort started in Warsaw in 1971, more than a quarter century after the war.

The first phase of the project was completed in 1974, and the restored Royal Castle building reopened to the public in 1984.
