The prestigious international guitar contest is part of the Silesian Guitar Autumn Festival, which is held every two years and has been a fixture on the cultural calendar in southern Poland since 1986, state news agency PAP reported.

Martin was rewarded on Sunday with EUR 5,000 in prize money, a professional guitar, and opportunities to perform in venues across Central and Eastern Europe, officials said.

Playing guitar since the age of five, Martin performs both early and contemporary music and has a number of accolades to her name, reporters were told.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Andrzej Grygier came second in the Jan Edmund Jurkowski Guitar Competition, winning EUR 2,500 and a guitar for best Polish contestant.

Hugo Molto Medina of Spain claimed third prize, worth EUR 1,000, while Italy’s Cristin Galietto won a special award for best sonata performance.

The week-long contest saw a selection of 24 guitarists from 11 countries vie for honours, with each player required to perform a free programme, a 20-century or 21-century guitar sonata, and a guitar concert with Tychy’s Aukso Orchestra, according to officials.

For many past winners, the Jan Edmund Jurkowski Guitar Competition has proved to be a springboard to international success, organisers said.

Silesian Guitar Autumn Festival

The 2022 Silesian Guitar Autumn Festival brought together soloists, chamber ensembles and orchestras from around the world, featuring virtuosos such as Adam del Monte and Enrike Solinis, as well as the likes of the Erlendis Quartet, the 2021 Latin Grammy Award winner Yamandu Costa, and the 2022 Grammy Award nominee Mak Grgić, officials said.

The festival comprised 17 events. Besides the Jan Edmund Jurkowski Guitar Competition, it included concerts and recitals by world-renowned classical musicians, as well as masterclasses and instrument exhibitions, the PAP news agency reported.
