Two Poles in Paderewski Piano Competition semifinals

Two Polish pianists, Mateusz Krzyżowski and Piotr Pawlak, have qualified for the semifinals of the International Ignacy Jan Paderewski Piano Competition in the north-central Polish city of Bydgoszcz.

The other semifinalists are Moka Takubo and Shio Okui of Japan, Jun Lin Wu of China, Yi-Teng Huang of Taiwan, Elia Cecino of Italy, Georgi Vasilev of Bulgaria, Salas Pedro Lopez of Spain, and Danylo Saienko of Ukraine.

The programme of the semifinals, which begin on Tuesday, consists of a solo recital and one of Mozart’s concertos performed with the Capella Bydgostiensis chamber orchestra conducted by Paweł Kapała.

Five pianists will qualify for the final stage of the competition, which is scheduled for November 18 and 19. The prizewinners will then perform concerts in Bydgoszcz on November 20 and Warsaw on November 21.

The Paderewski Piano Competition, which is named after the legendary Polish pianist, composer and statesman, was launched in 1961. Since 1998, it has been held every three years, attracting pianists from around the world.
