Based on real events, the Polish-US-British co-production tells the life story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, identical twin sisters who grew up in Wales and who refused to communicate with anyone but each other.

The film traces their tragic history, leading to their incarceration in Britain's high-security Broadmoor mental health hospital, against the protests of their family.

After her two successful films The Lure and Fugue, Smoczyńska decided to adapt a book by British journalist Marjorie Wallace for her first English-language feature.

The Silent Twins won the top Golden Lions award at the 47th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia in September.

The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the 75th Cannes Film Festival.

"I am very nervous before the British premiere of The Silent Twins because this is a UK story," Smoczyńska told Radio Poland's Danuta Isler.

"It is a very hard story, and I am an outsider," she added.
