Polish actor Leonard Pietraszak dies aged 86

Prominent Polish actor Leonard Pietraszak has died at the age of 86.

The news of his passing was confirmed on Wednesday by Krzysztof Szuster, head of the Association of Polish Theatre, Film, Radio and Television Artists (ZASP), state news agency PAP reported.

A well-known face on the silver screen in Poland for decades, Pietraszak created many memorable film roles, including in TV series that achieved cult status when the country was under communism until 1989.

These included Czarne chmury (Clouds of War), Kariera Nikodema Dyzmy (The Career of Nicodemus Dyzma) and Czterdziestolatek (Being Forty), a television comedy series originally broadcast between 1974 and 1977.

Over the years, Pietraszak appeared in more than 30 films, including Polish cinema classics such as Juliusz Machulski's Vabank (1981) and Vabank II (1985).

Born in 1936 in the north-central city of BydgoszczPietraszak graduated in acting from Poland's famous Łódź Film School in 1960.

During his career as an actor, he worked for a number of theatres in Łódź, Poznań and Warsaw, including the Klasyczny, Komedia and Ateneum.
