The musicians will compete for awards in four categories: piano, violin, string quartet and voice. The largest group is that of young violinists.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Katowice Mayor Marcin Krupa said his city was proud to host the prestigious international event.

The competition aims to promote the legacy of Karol Szymanowski, one of the most prominent 20th-century Polish composers.

The prizewinners’ names will be announced on September 23.

The Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition was first held in 2018. It takes place every five years.

Organized by the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, the event is jointly financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the City of Katowice.
