Polish documentary about Ukraine war makes Oscar 2024 shortlist

America's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the "semi-finalists" in the race for the 2024 Oscars in 10 of the categories on Thursday, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.

Poland's In the Rearview made the shortlist of 15 contenders in the "documentary feature film" category.

Also on the shortlist is Apolonia, Apolonia, a Denmark-Poland co-production directed by Lea Glob, the Polish Film Institute (PISF) said. 

Meanwhile, Jonathan Glazer’s UK-Poland-US co-production The Zone of Interest has been shortlisted for the 2024 Oscar in the "international feature film" category.

The semi-finalists do not include Poland's official entry for the 2024 Academy Award in this category, the hand-painted animation The Peasants by Dorota Kobiela (DK) Welchman and Hugh Welchman, the IAR news agency reported.  

In the Rearviewa Polish-French-Ukrainian co-production, in June won the Grand Jury Award at the 2023 Sheffield Docfest in Britain. 

Nominations for the 96th Academy Awards will be announced on January 23.

The 2024 Oscars ceremony will take place in Los Angeles' Dolby Theater on March 10.
