The contestants were selected by an international jury from among 162 performers in a preliminary round.

Chinese pianists make up the largest national group, with 31 competitors, followed by Japan and Poland, each with 13.

Artur Szklener, director of Poland's National Chopin Institute, told a press conference that the preliminary round was marked by "a high artistic level of all participants."

He noted that several of the selected pianists have already achieved international acclaim.

Among the contestants is American pianist Eric Lu, who won fourth prize at the Warsaw competition a decade ago at age 17. He later went on to win the Leeds International Piano Competition and has performed at top venues around the world.

Jury chairman Piotr Paleczny, a Polish pianist and laureate of the 1970 competition, was quoted as saying that the jury was seeking "well-rounded, creative artistic personalities—pianists who love Chopin and have a special feel for his music."

The 19th International Chopin Piano Competition opens in Warsaw on October 2, with winners to be announced on October 20.

The top prize includes EUR 60,000 in cash, as well as concert engagements and recording opportunities.

Founded in 1927, the Warsaw competition is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious piano contests.

Past winners include renowned pianists such as Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Garrick Ohlsson, Krystian Zimerman, Rafał Blechacz, Seong-Jin Cho and Bruce Liu.
