Grażyna Plebanek, a Warsaw-born writer now living in Brussels, has been elected president of the European Writers' Council (EWC), a federation of 50 writers’ and translators’ associations from 32 countries.
The EWC represents over 220,000 professional authors working in 35 languages, including members from EU countries as well as the UK, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Belarus, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.
Plebanek, who lived for several years in Stockholm before settling in Brussels in 2005, began her career as a journalist, writing columns for Reuters and Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza.
She later gained prominence for her bestselling novels, short stories, and plays, and now publishes in Polish, English, French, and Dutch. She also works in screenwriting, contributing to projects for platforms such as Netflix, Canal+ and ARTE.
Sharing the news on social media, Plebanek wrote: “President! Chairwoman? I’ve dreamed of working with the incredible international team at the European Writers’ Council!”
