Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, the company’s managing director Waldemar Dąbrowski said that the Polish National Opera this year celebrates a double anniversary, the bicentenary of the laying of the foundation stone for the building and the 60th anniversary of the opera’s re-opening after its rebuilding from WWII destruction.
He recalled that the decision to build an opera house in 1825, when Poland was under partitions and did not exist as a sovereign state, evoked national enthusiasm.
“The inaugural production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville on November 19, 1833,”, he said, “opened a great chapter in the history of not only Polish, but also European and global culture.”
The opera building was almost totally destroyed during World War Two. It opened its doors to the public again in November 1965, crowning, as it were, Warsaw’s post-war reconstruction that began 80 years ago.
To mark the occasion, the Polish National Opera will open the 2025/26 season with The Best City in the World, with music by Cezary Duchnowski to a libretto by Beniamin Bukowski, based on mofits from Grzegorz Piątek's acclaimed book The Best City in the World. Rebuilding Warsaw 1945-1949.

The performance, involving large orchestra, soloists, choir, dancers, as well as electronics and audiovisual projections, is to be a musical tribute to the grand national effort to raise Warsaw from the ruins of WWII.
Dąbrowski said that the season’s other highlights include Richard Strauss’s The Woman without a Shadow, Verdi’s Falstaff, and Charles Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet staged in co-production with Semperoper Dresden.
Previous seasons’ production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, The Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Moniuszko’s Halka, as well as Verdi’s Nabucco, Simon Boccanegra and La Traviata remain in the company’s staple repertoire.
Mieczysław Wajnberg’s The Passenger, a work on the Auschwitz theme directed by David Pountney, will have its revival after a lapse of 15 years.
Dąbrowski, who served as the Polish National Opera’s managing director since 2008, leaves the post on September 1. He will be succeded by Slovak-born designer Boris Kudlička, who has worked closely with the company for many years.
