At a gala ceremony in Kraków, southern Poland, Grzegorz Jankowicz, the director of the Book Institute, described Xavier Farré as "a poet and translator who moves between four languages daily: Catalan, Polish, Spanish, and Slovenian; a man who builds bridges between languages and cultures."
"Farré is a tireless ambassador of Polish literature in the entire Spanish-speaking area," Jankowicz said.
Born in 1971, Xavier Farré has translated books by Czesław Miłosz, Adam Zagajewski, Zbigniew Herbert, Olga Tokarczuk, Wioletta Grzegorzewska, Julia Hartwig, Stanisław Lem, and Tomasz Różycki, as well as plays by Krystian Lupa, Krzysztof Warlikowski, Ingmar Villqist and Dorota Masłowska.
Founded in 2005, the Transatlantyk Prize is given to foreign translators, editors, and critics for their contribution to the promotion of Polish literature abroad.
Past recipients of the Transatlantyk Prize include Anders Bodegård (Sweden), Albrecht Lempp (Germany), Ksenia Starosielska (Russia), Bill Johnston (United States), Lajos Pálfalvi (Hungary), Antonia Lloyd-Jones (United Kingdom), Ewa Thompson (Poland), and Tokimasa Sekiguchi (Japan).
