Born in Tunis in 1938, Cardinale rose to international fame in the 1960s and was often described as one of the most beautiful women in the world.
She appeared in nearly 200 films and worked with legendary directors including Federico Fellini, Sergio Leone and Werner Herzog.
Among her most celebrated roles were in 8½, The Pink Panther, Once Upon a Time in the West and The Professionals.
In 2002, she received the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for her contribution to cinema.
