The film, written and directed by Kei Ishikawa, is a UK-Japanese-Polish production. It is based on the novel by Nobel Prize-winning writer Kazuo Ishiguro, which traces the memories of a Japanese widow from postwar Nagasaki in the 1950s to life in England during the 1980s Cold War era.
Niemyjski’s previous credits include Bartek Konopka’s Fear of Falling (2012) and Krzysztof Zanussi’s Foreign Body (2014) and Ether (2018).
A Pale View of Hills also received a nomination for Best Costume Design, for Sayaka Takahashi and Matthew Price.
The soundtrack for the film is by Polish composer Paweł Mykietyn.
Launched in 1998, the British Independent Film Awards celebrate the best and most innovative independently funded British films.
