The film, based on a true story, follows Father Joseph Murolo, an American-born priest summoned by the Vatican to examine the life of Pope John Paul II and his path to sainthood after his death in 2005.
As he interviews witnesses and confidantes, Murolo becomes entangled in a moral and spiritual dilemma that tests his own faith.
Co-written by Bonello and Thomas Bidegain - the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Emilia Pérez - the film will begin shooting in Italy and Poland in March 2026.
Produced by companies from France, Italy, and Poland, including Madants (High Life), Santo Subito! is described as both a suspenseful investigation and a theological drama exploring the boundaries of truth and belief.
Ruffalo, a three-time Oscar nominee known for Poor Things, Spotlight, and Foxcatcher, is expected to bring “depth and intensity” to the role, according to producer Nicolas Brigaud-Robert of Playtime, which is handling international sales.
