The top spot on the list went to events and sites linked to the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

The newspaper described the Warsaw museum as "a new landmark that anchors Warsaw’s skyline, gleaming beside the hulking Stalin-era Palace of Culture and Science."

The NYT said 2026 will feature a major exhibition titled The Woman Question 1550–2025, which it called “a multichapter narrative of nearly 200 works that punctures the myth that few women were artists before the 19th century, threading Renaissance and Baroque painters through modern and contemporary voices."

Warsaw 'demands to be seen anew'

The paper also highlighted changes in the surrounding cityscape, noting that Defilad Square—Warsaw’s central square built in the 1950s for communist-era parades—is being transformed into a green, pedestrian-friendly space linking the museum to other cultural institutions, including the new home of avant-garde theatre TR Warszawa.

"For decades, the Polish capital has been seen as pragmatic rather than magnetic," the NYT wrote. "In 2026, it demands to be seen anew."

The Warsaw museum appeared on the list alongside destinations such as Bangkok, Route 66 in the United States, Bayreuth in Germany, Los Angeles, Nagasaki in Japan, Assisi in Italy, Nepal's lesser-known mountain regions and sites linked to Winnie-the-Pooh in England.
