The short is described in a producer’s note as "a highly entertaining film that playfully disrupts the boundaries of reality."
Set in June 1999, it follows Bogdan, who is determined to buy alcohol for his wife’s 50th birthday.
"His task is complicated by Pope John Paul II’s visit to Poland with its ban on the sale of alcohol, turning a simple trip to the shop into a metaphysical odyssey," the note says.
The 10 films in the competition have been selected from more than 3,100 submissions.
Another Polish short, Axles (Polish title: Trakcje) by Jakub Krzyszpin will have its world premiere in the Cannes festival’s La Cinef section.
According to the producer's note, the film "takes viewers inside a speeding train, where a man loses his ticket and, in a desperate attempt to recover it, spirals into obsessive searching. The increasingly distorted space pulls him into an unsettling labyrinth."
The La Cinef programme includes 19 shorts representing 15 countries selected from among the 2,750 sent by film schools all over the world.
In addition, 11 Polish films will be presented in the festival’s Short Film Corner, a non-competitive section that aims to create bonds between filmmakers and industry professionals.
The 79th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 12 to 23.
