Her death was announced on Tuesday afternoon on her official social media profile by Joanna Trzcińska, who helped manage her accounts.

"With great sorrow I must inform you that our Stasia passed away this afternoon," the post read.

Minister of Culture and National Heritage Marta Cienkowska wrote on social media: "It is with utmost sorrow and regret that I received the news of the passing of Stanisława Celińska, an outstanding theatre and film actress, a singer loved by several generations of fans, an artist of an extraordinary charisma, truth and great heart."

Born in Warsaw in 1947, Celińska trained at the State Theatre School in the capital before making her screen debut alongside Daniel Olbrychski in Andrzej Wajda's Landscape After the Battle (1970).

Her portrayal of Nina, a Jewish girl, who wanted to escape from a DP camp in post-WWII Germany with a young Polish poet, both of them German concentration camp survivors, won her excellent reviews.

Wajda, who died in 2016, is widely regarded as Poland's greatest film director.

Celińska made her theatrical debut while still a student at the Współczesny Theatre, one of Warsaw’s leading stages, in a comedy by Polish 19th-century playwright Aleksander Fredro.

She soon joined the company, becoming one its up-and-coming stars.

In 2002 Celińska received Warsaw's Felix award for best supporting actress for her role in Cleansed, a production of the late British playwright Sarah Kane's work directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski – one of Europe's most prominent theatre directors – at the Rozmaitości Theatre in Warsaw.

She appeared in some of Polish cinema and television's most enduring productions, among them Nights and Days, the satirical communist-era sitcom Alternatywy 4 and Maids of Wilko – another Wajda film that was nominated for the Academy Award for best foreign language film in 1980.

Celińska gained reputation for a wide range of roles in both psychological films and comedies, directed by Jerzy Antczak, Krzysztof Zanussi, Stanisław Bareja, Jerzy Stuhr and Juliusz Machulski.

She often played ordinary characters, such as a cleaning lady, a folk healer, or a doorkeeper, roles that won her several awards in the best supporting actress category.

Celińska was also a prolific radio performer, appearing in nearly 300 plays for Polish Radio and spending more than five decades in the long-running radio drama series Matysiakowie.

Her recording career flourished in the 2010s.

She gave numerous recitals and released several CDs, including with her own lyrics.

Her 2015 album Atramentowa... was certified double platinum in Poland, and she received a Fryderyk award – the Polish music industry's equivalent of a Grammy – in 2019.

Among her many honours were two Polish Film Academy Eagle awards for best supporting actress, the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland's highest state decorations, and the Gold Gloria Artis Medal for Cultural Merit.
