The programme comprises Karol Szymanowski's Stabat Mater and Veni Creator, Grażyna Bacewicz's Cello Concerto No. 2, with German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt as the soloist, and Wojciech Kilar's symphonic poem Krzesany.

The orchestra will be led by its music and artistic director, Krzysztof Urbański. The soloists in Szymanowski's works will be sopranos Sylwia Olszyńska and Ewa Vesin, mezzo-soprano Agata Schmidt and baritone Hubert Zapiór.

The concert, which will be repeated on Saturday, marks the start of the Warsaw Philharmonic's 125th season.

The orchestra gave its inaugural concert on November 5, 1901, with legendary pianist and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski as the soloist.

Highlights of the 2026/2027 season include guest performances by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sakari Oramo on October 11 and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle on June 2, 2027.

Piano music fans will have the chance to hear Leif Ove Andsnes in a recital marking the bicentenary of Beethoven's death, as well as Grigorij Sokolov, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Paul Lewis, Arcadi Volodos, Tianyao Lyu, Ingrid Fliter, Alexander Melnikov and Peter Jablonski.

The season's programme also includes performances by cellist Steven Isserlis; violinists Simone Lamsma, Maria Dueñas and Leila Josefowicz; violist Timothy Ridout; clarinetist Martin Fröst; and flutist Emmanuel Pahud.

Vocal recitals will feature German soprano Diana Damrau and Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński.

The 50th anniversary of the death of British composer Benjamin Britten will be marked by performances of his War Requiem, conducted by Charles Dutoit, and the cantata Saint Nicolas, featuring tenor Ian Bostridge and conducted by Paul Goodwin.

In addition to its regular concert programme, the Warsaw Philharmonic organises a variety of educational and outreach programmes for children.

In March, the Warsaw Philharmonic is scheduled to perform in Amsterdam and Turin.
