The exhibition, “Wool. Local sources and potential”, is being held in the historic Karol Scheibler Power Plant at the Fuzja complex.
It follows wool from sheep farming and shearing through traditional processing methods to contemporary applications in design, construction, gardening and art.
Joanna Czajkowska, president of the Foundation of the Institute of Industrial Design, said 90 percent of Polish wool resources are subject to disposal or destruction, describing wool as a valuable raw material and calling for broader discussion about its use.
The exhibition includes traditional tools and products, contemporary kilims, acoustic panels, projects using wool in green roofs, and wool as a raw material for fertiliser.
The main Forum events will take place from 8 to 11 October, while the wool exhibition opened on Tuesday and will be available until 18 October.
The Forum is a special edition of the Łódź Design Festival, organised in cooperation with the Marshal's Office of Łódź and devoted entirely to heritage, locality and tradition.
Another exhibition, “Future Heritage”, will present projects by young designers and craftspeople at Art_Inkubator. Participants were asked to reinterpret tradition, bringing together tradition and technology.
The Fuzja complex will also host “Łódzki Nurt”, an installation dedicated to the rivers that contributed to the development of Łódź's large factories in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and helped shape the city's local identity. The rivers now flow underground.
A conference called “The Power of Heritage” will take place on Friday, focusing on heritage as a source for contemporary design, brand development and place promotion.
Participants will include representatives of design, craftsmanship, business, local government and cultural institutions.
The international make me! “Heritage of the Future” competition will announce its winner during the conference. It received 212 entries from designers, craftspeople, folk artists, students, design studios and companies.
A post-competition exhibition at Łódź Art Center will show the 30 best projects selected by the jury. The competition also includes a new category for a product promoting the Łódź region.
