On Monday, 12 October, representatives of Sinfonia Varsovia, Warsaw City Hall and construction company Warbud signed a contract for the final stage of the orchestra’s headquarters project in Warsaw’s Praga-Południe district.

The concert hall will have nearly 1,900 seats and is expected to be the largest of its kind in Poland.

The investment is co-financed by Warsaw City Hall and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

The first stage, involving the renovation of the main building and two historic pavilions, has been completed, giving the orchestra a refurbished headquarters and supporting facilities.

“This is the culmination of many years of efforts by the orchestra’s director and musicians, as well as the fulfilment of the dreams of local residents,” said Tomasz Kucharski, mayor of Warsaw’s Praga-Południe district.

He noted that major cultural institutions have traditionally been concentrated on the left bank of the Vistula, while the right bank has received less attention.

Sinfonia Varsovia director Janusz Marynowski and his team had campaigned for nearly 17 years to secure a modern concert hall. The project is intended to serve not only classical music enthusiasts but also the wider public, including local residents.

The hall will feature tall glass walls allowing visitors in the foyer to look into the hall. The orchestra’s director said this would allow visitors and local residents to observe musicians outside performances and help bring audiences closer to music and culture.

“This will be the largest concert hall in Poland and, judging by the visualisations, certainly the most beautiful,” said Magdalena Sroka, Warsaw City Hall’s director-coordinator for culture and equality.
