The Hollywood studio is working with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for his work on the Transformers films alongside CD Projekt Red (CDPR), the Poland-based award-winning video game developer and the franchise rights holder.
Details of the film's story, potential release date and casting information are yet to be revealed.
Co-chief executive at CDPR, Michał Nowakowski said the company wants to explore the Cyberpunk universe without simply transferring the game’s story to the big screen.
Despite a troubled launch in 2020, the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, which stars Keanu Reeves, has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.
The game is set in the fictional cyberpunk metropolis of Night City in California, within the dystopian Cyberpunk universe.
At the centre of the game is V, a mercenary who gets reluctantly imbued with a cybernetic "biochip" containing an engram of legendary rockstar and terrorist Johnny Silverhand played by the John Wick star - Keanu Reeves.
As Silverhand's consciousness begins overwriting V’s own, the two must work together to separate from each other and save V’s life by confronting the Arasaka Corporation, a powerful megacorporation acting as the de facto ruler of the city.
An expansion, Phantom Liberty, starring Idris Elba was released in 2023 and has sold more than 15 million copies, according to CDPR.
Paramount Pictures also produced The Witcher, an adaptation of CDPR’s massively popular fantasy role-playing series.
Multiple video game series have been adapted for TV and film in recent years, with more due to follow.
Two Super Mario movies, a big screen version of Minecraft and a series of Sonic the Hedgehog films have each seen global box office takings of about USD 1 billion.
The PlayStation game The Last of Us was made into a hit series by HBO, and Prime Video says its adaptation of post-apocalyptic role-playing series Fallout is one of its most-watched programmes.
