Works by 15 artists from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia will be shown as part of the 13th Bielska Jesień art project, organised by the Galeria Bielska BWA venue in Bielsko-Biała.
The exhibition, titled Peripheral Vision, is curated by Piotr Sikora and Tomasz Pawłowski-Jarmołajew. It will open on November 6 and run until January 10.
The title refers to the characteristics of peripheral vision, in which the outer areas of the retina are particularly sensitive to movement, light and contrast. The curators use this as a starting point for examining painting from the three neighbouring countries.
Bielsko-Biała's location near the meeting point of the three countries' borders provides a regional perspective shaped by their proximity and connections.
The curators said they selected works for their subtlety, luminosity, blurred edges and atmosphere of mystery, describing them as blurred afterimages that contrast with the clarity of high-definition imagery.
They said recent Polish painting has often addressed politically charged subjects, including minority experiences and the defence of tolerance, coexistence and individual rights. They contrasted this with the exhibition's focus on a different aesthetic characterised by lower contrast.
The selected works are largely figurative, with symbols, artifacts, interiors and atmosphere playing important roles. The curators said some of the works evoke black romanticism or emo-romanticism.
The artists featured include Sarah Dubna, Andrej Dubravsky, Cristina Ferreira-Szwarc, Joanna Woś and Julia Woronowicz.
The exhibition also includes works by Lera Dubitskaya, Łukasz Stokłosa, Michal Sumichrast, Olga Krykun, Paula Gogola, Paweł Olszewski, Paweł Sobczak, Sebastian Mikoś and Stepan Broz, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Curatorial exhibitions as part of the Bielska Jesień project have been held by Galeria Bielska BWA every two years since 2000, alternating with the Bielska Jesień Biennale. They focus on the latest trends in Polish painting and are often organised around selected concepts, movements and artistic approaches.
Galeria Bielska BWA was established in 1960 by the local artistic community and has been part of the Bielsko-Biała local government for 32 years.
