Krasnodębski praised the general movement, associated with the ruling Law and Justice party, of recognising "historical memory" and "historical policy/politics" - the latter Polish term being ambiguous.

He said, "We have only just begun to realise that historical memory is an unusually important thing. It is the role of the state and the education system to shape historical memory."

On the one hand, he emphasized that "history is in some sense open" and we "need to be open when thinking about history".

But he also alluded to the new Polish school subject "History and the Present" (HiT) which has been strongly criticised for its perceived ideological treatment of history.

Krasnodębski said that, "for young people, history and historical knowledge become significant when we show that they relate to present situations - that history is something relevant to their lives."

(Zdzisław Krasnodębski (1953) is a professor of sociology and social theory and an EU MP for the Law and Justice party (PiS).)
